about
What do you say to someone who loses a close friend or family member? Or maybe someone you know survived a horrible event like a car accident or suicide attempt. This is the song that says, “I don’t know what to say, but I’m here for you.”
Delicately stepping into life’s most fragile moments “Sometimes My Words Won’t Come to Me” offers healing and solace—allowing us a means to comfort the people we care about most.
Mark Kozik was the best man in my wedding. We were in a band together, and he was my college roommate. Like so many others who lost their lives in 2020 and after, Mark died Dec. 19, 2021. On the one-year anniversary of his passing, I texted his older brother to share a story about Mark. I didn’t mention the obvious (That this was the one-year anniversary of his death). The meaningful response Mark’s brother gave inspired me to write this song.
He said, “I don’t love my brother any more or less on this day than I do any other day of the year. I love him the same every day. I think about him every day.” There is a place for talking and counseling, but many times it’s best to be quiet and listen. Be there. Be present. Pray silently. That’s what this song is about. Share this song with someone who needs to know you're there for them!
I’ve never written a song like this. Its moving lines and dynamics are unlike anything I’ve ever done. This is the first of three songs I wrote about Mark.
lyrics
Sometimes my words
Won’t come to me
They leave when you need me
But I’m here to sit silently
Because my words
Won’t come to me
I don’t know what
I should say
On this fateful day
But I’m here anyway
It’s just my words
Have gone away
You say I talk too much
I have a bunch of things to say
But not today
